Iron Man Mk. 42 Commission Process

Just finished another commission and figured I'd show the process. I started this with blueline pencil on bristol, after several thumbnails and referring to models and reference.

After the pencils were good enough, it was time for inks. I usually ink with Copic Multiliners, although I'm happy to crack out a brush. For something that requires as much precision as Iron Man, pens were the way to go.

After inks, it was time for markers. I went in with flat colors, using the lightest base tone I had, and blocked everything in.

Once the base colors are laid in, it's time for detail! I basically paint with the Copics and then drop highlights in last with white ink or gel pen.

Aaaaaand this is the final piece, after all's said and done.

Glad I was finally able to finish this guy before the show. He's just so damn cute, and wound up being a huge draw to my table. The original is now officially SOLD!

He just wants to get to the creamy chocolate center. ;)

ECCC 2014

Gods, ECCC was such a blast! This was my first time doing the show as an artist instead of a retailer, and damn if it wasn't amazing! Sold quite a few prints at the show and learned a ton. #1 rule of doing con as an artist: Don't show up on day 2 at 8AM. Everyone will laugh at you. LOL

Playing catchup

Good god, this poor thing has been my longest standing commission, requested of me just before my body began going into meltdown more than a year ago. Very glad for a patient, understanding client, who was stoked to receive it in time to give as a birthday present this year.

Definitely one of the most interesting requests that I've had to date, and one of the tougher ones to figure out in the pencils phase. I have a tough time with mechanical stuff already, combined with the perspective...well, let's just say I had to redraw the thing far more times than I'd like to admit. LOL

Don't ask me what the story is behind it, I just draw what they pay me for. ;)

My first new anything in a looong while. Took me a few days on and off, as I was feeling up to it. Wearing the wrist brace all the time seems to have helped a bit with the carpal tunnel and the new med is doing nicely to filter out a lot of the white noise in my nervous system. Still not fixed yet though, but working on it. =)

Didn't want to bugger up a paid piece in my long suffering to-do list, so this is up for grabs. Drop me a message if you're interested in this piece adorning a wall near you! Papa's been out of commission for a while and needs to start a Cintiq fund. ;)

A Matched Set...

Reworked my male brawler - added more contrast and color work in the skin particularly, and finished up little Miss FemBrawler a few minutes ago. I realized that I burn through Copics relatively fast with the way that I do marker work. I just went to Dick Blick yesterday to get refills for my C1 & C3, and after a morning of working, it turns out I'm going to need at least a new C5 as well! Ah well. Anyway, without further ado, here they are! =)

Here's a quick bit of process for my latest monster design. I didn't take as many scans during this as I was originally planning, but I got in the zone while I was working and totally forgot. LOL

Finally sat down and finished inking and toning my Brawler drawing with Copics this evening. =)

Sketch o'the Day...brawler concept

Worked on some concept art tonight. Did a new character design for a melee class (Brawler) for the new Carmine expansion. I envision this kind of character with medium to heavy armor on the arms and from the knees down, in order to be able to block edged and blunt weapons effectively, but with minimal armor on the core part of the body in order to facilitate fast movement.

Rough pencils, followed by copic multiliners & markers, Final highlights with white ink pen.

Sketch o'the Day...Drink n' Draw edition, part deux

OK, had some time this evening to throw about another hour into my unfinished Batman sketch from the Jet City Drink n Draw last Thursday. Did the final touches with a multiliner, white paint pen & Copic cool grey markers.

Took me about an hour or so to clean up edges & tweak with hues/saturations in Photoshop to colorize my grey tones from the Copics.

Got about another 2-3 hours into this today. Laid down tones with my Copic markers and then dropped in some highlights with an opaque paint pen. Next step will be to colorize in Photoshop. I swear, every time I use these damn things, I love them more and more! =)

Sketches o'the Day...Ultraman & Iron Man

Hey there, super limited audience! =)

Here's a couple pieces that I did tonight while hanging out with my friends and playing a rousing game of Arkham Horror LOL.

I finished the inks for Iron Man here first. Started the pencils as a second drawing during my last gaming session with the boys. Wasn't super happy with some of the shapes around the head, so I did a bunch of refining tonight, and finally worked out a design I liked. I always have a really tough time figuring out mechanical stuff. I swear it's my kryptonite. Anyway, decided to take my new Copic Multiliner SP's for a spin and inked away, and I have to say, I'm really happy with the result. About 1.5 hours dicking around with the pencils, and about another hour or so on the inks in between my turns in the game. I plan to hit this with markers next and see how it goes.

I felt like there was another one in me tonight, but couldn't figure out what the hell to draw for the longest time. I kind of just started doodling out out the shadows from a heavily down-lit face, and wound up with a drawing of Ultraman, Superman's evil antimatter universe counterpart, and leader of the Crime Syndicate of Amerika. I really like his facial expression. I just imagine that he'd take great joy with being the last thing that you'd ever see. He's kind of a dick like that LOL. I plan on hitting him with inks and markers next. Got a solid 45 minutes or so into the pencils.

My second piece with the mighty, mighty Copics. Yeah, I'm really starting to develop an almost unhealthy infatuation with these things. First markers that I've found that aren't splotchy and a giant pain in my ass to use. Added bonus is that the greyscale makes colorization in Photoshop  easy as hell!

Did this on & off for about 3 hours or so during my regular tabletop game. Sounds like were going to use this for the next Carmine expansion as a new type of Taligar.
